Calcium chloride is a colorless cubic crystal, appearing white or gray-white, with granular, honeycomb block, spherical, irregular granular, or powdery forms. It has a melting point of 772°C, a boiling point of 1600°C, and a density of 2.15 g/cm³.
It exhibits extremely strong hygroscopicity and readily deliquesces when exposed to air. It is highly soluble in water, with a solubility of 74.5 g/100g water at 20°C, releasing a considerable amount of heat (enthalpy of dissolution of calcium chloride is -176.2 cal/g). Its aqueous solution is slightly acidic. Calcium chloride is readily soluble in various polar and protonic solvents.

Application
1. In aquaculture, adding calcium chloride to water can create a pH-buffering solution and increase water hardness. It enhances the availability of calcium for aquatic organisms, which utilize it for forming calcium carbonate shells. While hydrated lime or a calcium reactor can achieve similar results, calcium chloride is faster and has less impact on water pH.
2. In concrete, calcium chloride accelerates curing and enhances the frost resistance of mortar, serving as an excellent anti-freezing agent. It aids in speeding up initial setting in concrete but must not be used in reinforced concrete due to chloride ion-induced corrosion of steel bars. Anhydrous calcium chloride provides moisture to concrete due to its hygroscopic nature.
3. Flame retardant for textiles.
4. Aqueous calcium chloride solutions are crucial refrigerants for refrigeration systems and ice-making.
5. Used as an anti-fogging agent in ports and dust suppressant on roads.
6. Used as a protective and refining agent in aluminum-magnesium metallurgy.
7. Acts as a precipitant in the production of chrome pigments.
8. Employed in de-inking processes in paper recycling.
9. Raw material for calcium salt production.
10. Used as a lubricating oil additive.
11. Serves as a versatile desiccant, particularly for drying gases like nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, and sulfur dioxide. It's also used as a dehydrating agent in the production of alcohols, esters, ethers, and acrylic resins.
12. Used in the food industry as a calcium fortifier, curing agent, chelating agent, and drying agent.
